LONDON - The United States has fallen victim to its own prejudice policies against China and therefore should remedy them, said Robert Griffiths, general secretary of the Communist Party of Britain.

In a recent interview with Xinhua, talking about the US-initiated trade tension with China, Griffiths said "it is bad for the US, (and) it is needlessly provocative."

China can make great progress in trade not only by exporting to but also by importing from the whole world, he said, adding that the US protectionism characterized by provoking China with tariffs "is a very bad step." "I can imagine the US will reconsider it, because the only real loser from it is the United states," Griffiths said, emphasizing that "the US is missing great opportunities to expand trade with China."

Referring to the recent US actions against China as "needless provocation," Griffiths said that imposing tariffs will make no differences for the United States no matter in economy or trade.

Speaking of China's response, Griffiths said that "I must say, given the level of provocation, that unilateral action by the United States, China's response has been very measured, very restrained, very mature."

The United States has suffered from the negative economic impact of the trade tensions sparked by itself, so has the whole world, Griffiths said.

"It sent negative messages to people across world, (as) people are always concerned when countries adopted a belligerent stance."

"Trade war between the US and China certainly is not beneficial for the international economy in general," Griffiths said.

"Hopefully, in some sense, common sense will prevail, (and) various circles within the US ruling class will recognize they will be losing out if they restrict the economic relationship with China."

It is impossible for the United States to achieve success by preventing China's development, he added. "China shows that it is determined to pursue its policies in the interests of Chinese people, and also the interests of all people who want to do business with China."

"China shows it will not be intimidated, it will not be bullied, and it will not give in to provocation and belligerent actions by the US and anyone else," said Griffiths.

"Therefore, the best course for America by far is to drop the provocation, drop the aggression, come to meet Chinese on equal terms and settle their differences around the negotiating table," Griffiths noted.
