 It seemed that parts of China, isolated by difficult physical geography, had continued with seemingly traditional life passed down through the centuries. A lack of infrastructure in airports, railways and modern highways had left such communities relatively cut off. Indeed I remember on reaching Lijiang that even Kunming, Yunnan's provincial capital, seemed so far away. How things have changed today!
