Chinese Filipino Carlos Chan has been named special envoy to China by three Philippine presidents. He gave himself a Chinese name, Shi Gongxi (施恭旗).
He opened his snack food business in Shanghai in 1993. He made the decision, after an inspiring speech by the late State leader and chief architect of the reform and opening up policy Deng Xiaoping in 1992.
Today, Chan's company Oishi ranks among the top 3 snack brands in China. This year, Forbes List of Wealthy Filipinos ranked Chan in 21st place.
In this exclusive video, Chan talked about how he worked through the difficulties in a land newly-opened to foreign investors. But Chan's parents hailed from Fujian and through his emotional ties to China, Chan earned the trust of his Chinese workers, who were not so open to opening up at the very beginning.
