Venue: National Centre for the Performing Arts

The Chinese opera Tu Youyou tells the story of Tu Youyou, a Chinese scientist of traditional Chinese medicine and laureate of the 2015 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, about her discovery of artemisinin. Her name Youyou comes from a sentence of the Chinese Book of Odes, "Deer bleat 'youyou' while they are eating the wild Hao." From the origin of her name, it seems she is destined to have an unexplainable bound with Qinghao (artemisia annua) which is mentioned in the book. When Tu was a young girl, she suffered from lung disease and it was Chinese medicine that saved her life. Since then, she has engaged in traditional Chinese medicine. She has dedicated her life as a scientist of traditional Chinese medicine to heal the wounded and dying.
