HK writing reaches the UK

Wasafiri and British Council have put together a panel discussion on writers and writing from Hong Kong. Wasafiri is a UK-based influential quarterly magazine established in the mid-1980s, publishing some of the finest writing from around the world. Be it short stories, graphic novels, essays, reviews or poetry, stuff published in Wasafiri is always engaging. The publication is truly international in spirit, helping to break cultural barriers and give a platform to a diverse range of voices from the world over.

Wasafiri recently brought out a Hong Kong-themed edition, exploring new critical and creative approaches that directly engage with Hong Kong's geography, history, politics and poetics. Some of Hong Kong's noteworthy literary voices writing in both Chinese and English.

Panelists from Hong Kong, New York City and London, including poet and critic Shirley Geok-lin Lim, academic Jeffrey Mather, fiction writer Dorothy Tse, writer Denis Wong, and Rukhsana Yasmin, deputy editor of Wasafiri, will talk about the diversity of language, form and genre in literature today. They will also respond to queries about writing and publishing across cultures and discuss the ways in which identities are expressed and formulated through different narrative forms. Themes such as urban identity, globalization and social inequality are also likely to come up.
