The 'Chinese Hamlet'

In the aftermath of a violent coup, an epic story of self-sacrifice and revenge plays out as a young orphan discovers the shattering truth behind his childhood.

Sometimes referred to as the Chinese Hamlet and tracing its origins to the 4th century BC, The Orphan of Zhao was the first Chinese play to be translated in the West.

James Fenton has written a new adaptation of the play, which is being presented in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. It is directed by the Royal Shakespeare Company artistic director Gregory Doran, who recently directed Written on the Heart and Julius Caesar as part of the World Shakespeare Festival.

James Fenton is an international award-winning poet and playwright. He has worked widely both as a political and literary journalist and foreign correspondent.
