WASHINGTON - The US Senate on Tuesday approved nomination of Army Gen. Martin Dempsey as next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The Senate confirmed Dempsey in a voice vote. Also confirmed were James Winnefeld as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Ray Odierno as Army chief and Jonathan Greenert as chief of naval operations.
In a statement, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said he looks forward to "working closely with all of these outstanding leaders" as "they bring with them immense intellect, proven leadership and far-reaching strategic vision."
Dempsey, who currently serves as the Army's chief of staff, will succeed Mike Mullen after the current chairman retires on October 1.
