The DPJ is working to set the date for the election as Prime Minister Naoto Kan's term as the party's leader expires in September.

According to a Kyodo News survey released earlier in the day, the disapproval rate for Prime Minister Naoto Kan's cabinet has risen to 52.2 percent, far surpassing its approval rate which has plunged to 36.3 percent.

The DPJ-led ruling coalition suffered a setback in the upper house election Sunday, losing its overall majority in the chamber.
