Medium earthquakes shake north of Chile

SANTIAGO - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck northern Chile Tuesday noon, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The USGS said that the epicenter was located 95 km of Calama de Antofagasta and the focus was at a depth of 91.4 km.

At the moment there were not reports of victims or damage.

Another earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale hit the regions of Valparaiso and Libertador O'Higgins Tuesday morning, the USGS said.

The quake was centered about 90 km southwest of San Antonio de Valparaiso, with a depth of 11.6 km.

On February 27, Chile was battered by an 8.8-degree earthquake, followed by a tsunami, which killed some 500 people and left damages of more than US$30 billion.
