BOGOTA - The remains of a policeman, who died in rebel captivity in 2006, were recovered and handed over to his family on Thursday.
A helicopter took a team to the site, where the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) said Mayor Julian Ernesto Guevara was buried, and excavated his body.
Forensic experts will determine through a DNA test whether the body belonged to Guevara.
Guevara was kidnapped, along with other policemen, during a FARC attack on Mitu in November 1998. He died of several infectious diseases in January 2006 at the age of 41.
