NEW DELHI - India on Sunday successfully testfired its nuclear-capable, short-range Agni I ballistic missile off the coast of the eastern state of Orissa, a defense ministry official said.
"The testfiring of the indigenously developed missile at 1:05 pm from the Integrated Test Range at Wheeler Island in Bay of Bengal off the Orissa coast has been successful. The missile met all parameters. It has been developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization," he said.
Agni I, developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program, is capable of carrying a conventional payload of 1,000 kg of a nuclear warhead.
It has a range of 700-800 km and is a single stage, solid fuel ballistic missile.
