BAGHDAD - Iraqi police say mortar fire has killed three people in northeastern Baghdad.

A police official says two mortar shells fell in the Ur neighborhood, also wounding five people.

The death toll was confirmed by hospital officials. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The deaths came as Iraqis head to the polls in key parliamentary elections to determine who will govern the country as US forces depart.

Insurgents have threatened to disrupt the vote with violence. Dozen of people have been killed in attacks around the country this week, although violence is at much lower levels than when Iraqis voted in 2005 in the last parliamentary vote.
