Decline in demand for buildings slows in Japan

TOKYO: The total number of buildings started in Japan in January stood at 8,970, a decline of 14.4 percent compared to the previous year, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on Friday.

The decline slowed compared to previous month, which saw buildings started down by 21.7 percent.

Of the new buildings, 541 were started with public investment and 8,429 with private money.

The number of buildings started with private investment was down 15.5 percent compared to the same month in 2009.

Of the new buildings, 5,743 were for living in.

Housing starts also fell by 8.1 percent for the month. It was the 14th consecutive month of decline.
