Death toll from building collapse in S. India rises to 10

NEW DELHI: Rescue workers Thursday recovered more bodies from the collapsed building in Bellary city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, bring the death toll of the incident to 10, said police.

Rescue teams pulled out five more people trapped under the rubble after rescuing 19 people, said police.

Karnataka Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa visited the site of the incident and the hospital where the wounded were being treated. He announced a 25,000 rupee (US$500) compensation for each of the injured.

An under construction building collapsed in Bellary city late Tuesday night. Rubble of the building fell into the premises of a neighboring boys' hostel causing several deaths and many injuries.

A probe has been ordered into the incident and the engineer of the building has been detained for questioning.
