190 killed in traffic accidents in Yangon in 11 months

YANGON: A total of 190 people were killed and 1,536 others injured in 805 car accident cases in Myanmar's former capital of Yangon during the first 11 months of this year, up from the same period of last year, according to the traffic police authorities Monday.

Most of the traffic accident cases were caused by the negligence and lack of observance of traffic rules by both drivers and people crossing roads, the authorities said.

In 2008 when 153 died and 1,185 injured in 668 such cases and the loss due to car accidents during the year amounted to US $18.3 million, the figures indicate.

In 2007, a total of 133 people lost their lives and 1,550 others injured in 929 car accident cases in the Yangon municipal area.

Statistics also revealed that Myanmar lost 3 percent of gross domestic product annually due to car accidents across the country.
