WELLINGTON: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit New Zealand's North Island early Monday, and there were no reports of casualties or damage, the GNS Science said.
The tremor occurred at 1: 42 am Monday local time (12:42 GMT Sunday), centered 10 km west of Waipukurau, Hawke's Bay, at a depth of 70 km, the New Zealand Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences reported.
It said the quake was felt throughout the lower North Island.
