Suicide bomber kills 13 in Afghanistan

HERAT, Afghanistan: A suicide bomber on a motorcycle killed 13 people including three policeman and wounded 35 in an attack in a crowded area in southwest Afghanistan on Friday, a provincial police chief said.

Among the wounded in the attack in Farah province, five were listed as being in serious condition, Farah Police Chief Faqir Mohammad Askar said. The death toll had earlier been put at seven.

Farah Province Police Chief Faqir Mohammad Askar said the target of the attack in Farah City, the provincial capital, was not immediately clear.

Farah, a mainly desert province along the border with Iran, is one of the areas that has seen a rise in insurgent attacks this year as Taliban militants have spread to the west and north from their traditional bases in the south and east.
