31 killed in Myanmar ferry capsize

YANGON - A total of 31 passengers were killed and 19 others still missing and feared dead in a ferry boat capsize accident on Sunday night in Myanmar's southwestern Ayeyawaddy division, official sources confirmed Tuesday.

Of the 176 passengers on board the ferry, 126 passengers survive and are being taken care of.

The ferry boat, Nay Myo Tun Kyi, sank on Sunday night after colliding with an oil barge, Dana, in the Ngawun River, about 10. 45 kilometers from Pathein, the capital of Ayayawaddy division, the sources said.

Rescue work is underway by local authorities and the investigation of the accident is under way, it added.
