The nominee to the presidential position, proposed by European Integration Alliance, was favored by 53 deputies of the governmental coalition, eight short of the required 61 votes in the 101-seat parliament.

The Communists refused to participate in voting procedure, declaring they wouldn't contribute to establishing "a regime of antisocial and anti-European right-wing dictatorship" in the former Soviet republic.

The new parliament was elected in a snap election on July 29 and is made up of 48 representatives of the Communist Party, 18 from the Liberal Democratic Party, 15 from the Liberal Party, 13 from the Democratic Party and seven from the Our Moldova Alliance. The latter four parties in August formed a governmental coalition named European Integration Alliance.
