According to the Department of Homicides and Protection of Person (DHPP), Simone Motta met the man through a web-based chatroom. She had established a relationship with the man who turned out to be her murderer.

The police said Motta received a telephone call on October 20 and left the house where she used to live with her relatives to meet the man for the last time.

Due to relationship problems, the couple allegedly had a major confrontation that ended up with the death of Motta, hanged and then burned by the murderer.

The police arrested the man, who was 24 years old and had no criminal record. He confessed the crime, saying it had happened "within five minutes of fury."

The victim was a cousin of Sergio Motta, former minister of communications in the government of ex-President Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1994-2002).
