The talks come two days after Clinton declared siding with Israel as regards the issue of settlement and the resumption of the peace talks.

On Saturday, Clinton stressed that a full Israeli settlement freeze was at no stage a precondition to the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

"The peace process is getting through a critical stage" Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Abul Gheit told a press conference, "We want to have guarantees for the Palestinians that ensure them that these negotiations would not be used to waste time or to achieve Israeli objectives against them."
