Former President Francois Mitterrand reacted reluctantly to the opening of the wall on November 9, 1989, and the French were apprehensive at the time toward German unity.

Pierre Lellouche, the French official who organized the Paris celebrations, says they are a "present from France to Germany."

Twenty-seven cellists, each representing one European Union member, will play atop a pedestal while photos from Berlin 20 years ago will be projected onto nearby buildings.
