Updated: 2009-10-21 13:52 NEW DELHI: A passenger train crashed into another train early Wednesday near the Taj Mahal in northern India, killing at least 10 people and trapping scores of people in a smashed coach, police said.
One of the trains, Mewar Express, was stopped at a red signal when another train rammed into it from behind, Sharma told The Associated Press. Rescuers recovered 10 bodies so far but the death toll could rise, said Surendra Srivastava, the Uttar Pradesh state police spokesman. Twenty-five injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals, Srivastava said. Villagers and army soldiers stationed nearby helped police and rail officials in rescuing injured people. Authorities are still trying to determine why the accident happened, rail official Sri Prakash said. |
