Storm Ketsana kills 26 in Vietnam

Updated: 2009-09-30 02:01 HANOI: At least 15 more people died in severe flooding caused by tropical storm "Ketsana" in central Vietnam, bringing the country's death toll to 26 so far, Vietnam News Agency reported Tuesday. Two more people are reported missing in the floods, according to the agency. In Thua Thien Hue province, over 320 houses have been demolished or unroofed by the storm, said the report.
In Quang Ngai province, a 1,500-ton ship anchored in the Dung Quat port was swamped by the storm. In Kon Tum province, severe landslides caused by heavy rains and floods have made all provincial roads inaccessible Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai urged provincial authorities to take urgent measures to ensure the safety of local residents and a sufficient food supply, said the report. Rescue forces were asked to be on alert round-the-clock to deal with emergencies, such as dyke breaches. |
