BUCHAREST: The Moldovan government headed by Prime Minister Zinaida Grecianii Wednesday tabled its resignation during an ordinary cabinet meeting.

According to reports by the official Moldpres news agency reaching here, the resignation was announced in the presence of President Vladimir Voronin in line with the legislation in force, as the first meeting of the newly-elected parliament is scheduled for Friday, 28 August.

The first sitting of the parliament will be chaired by the oldest MP and the parliament members are scheduled to set a date for the presidential election, after which the newly elected president will nominate the candidate for Prime Minister. Under the law, the candidate has 15 days to present the government program and the nominal list of the Cabinet members to the parliament.

The cabinet headed by Zinaida Grecianii was appointed on 31 March 2008 and worked on the basis of the government program Progress and Integration. The current composition of the cabinet, which operates under provisional conditions, was instituted after the elections of April 5 and is mostly composed by the previous governmental team headed by Zinaida Greceanii.

The new parliament was elected in a snap poll on 29 July after the parliament elected on 5 April failed to elect the president. Under the Moldova constitution, the parliament elects the president and at least 61 votes of the 101-member parliament are required for electing a president. If no candidate gets the required votes in at most two rounds of balloting, the parliament is dissolved and a snap parliamentary election is to be called.
