BAGHDAD: An American soldier was killed in combat action in Baghdad Sunday, the U.S. military said on Monday.

A Multi-National Division-Baghdad soldier died of wounds sustained during a combat with insurgents while on patrol in Baghdad, a military statement said without giving further details about the incident.

The incident is under investigation, the statement added.

So far in August, the U.S. military announced the death of five of its soldiers due to combat and non-combat related incidents across the war-torn country.

About 4,334 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the outbreak of Iraq war in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
