Updated: 2009-08-05 10:28 WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama on Tuesday shared his birthday cake with the oldest White House correspondent who was born on the same date with him.
Obama showed up in the White House press briefing room, leading all reporters present in singing Happy Birthday to Helen Thomas, a columnist with Hearst Newspaper, while presenting her a plate of cupcakes with birthday candles on them.
"I will leave it up to you, Helen, how you want to distribute the cupcakes," said Obama to Thomas. He told reporters after Thomas blew out a candle that she has wished for peace and no prejudice in the world and working cooperatively with his agenda -- a health care reform bill. The episode was staged after Obama had a birthday lunch with all of his allies at the Senate, 58 Democrats and two Democrat-leaned independents, to discuss the healthcare reform bill. According to the White House, the president, who was born in 1961 in Hawaii, had much of his birthday celebration over the weekend, by hanging out with friends and family at the presidential retreat of Camp David in Maryland. |
