ROK to launch 1st rocket this month

SEOUL: South Korea says it has set a new date to launch its first rocket after a delay caused by a technical glitch.

Science Ministry official Yum Ki-soo says Saturday the two-stage rocket will blast off on August 11 from the country's new space center. It will be mounted with a satellite and will be the first rocket launched from South Korean soil.

South Korea delayed the planned launch last month at the request of the Russian firm helping to build the rocket.

The August launch comes four months after rival the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired its own multistage rocket.

The DPRK insisted it sent a satellite into orbit while the US and its allies said it was actually a test of long-range missile technology.
