Sarkozy expected to leave hospital after collapse

PARIS: French President Nicolas Sarkozy is expected to leave hospital on Monday, having spent the night there to undergo cardiological tests after falling ill while jogging, a minister said on Monday.

The 54-year-old suffered a dizzy spell while jogging in the park of the Chateau of Versailles on Sunday, and had to lie down before being flown by helicopter to the Val-de-Grace military hospital in Paris. He did not lose consciousness.

"The news from medical staff is good, he's leaving today, which proves that it's fine," Patrick Devedjian, the minister on charge of France's fiscal recovery plan, told French radio RTL on Monday.

"Everyone knows that he stayed in hospital for tests, that's normal when you suffer a dizzy spell, all of this looks positive," he said.

Sarkozy did not lose consciousness but stayed in hospital overnight for what his office described as routine cardiological examinations.

He has cancelled an event on Monday and a decision will be taken on his Tuesday schedule. He is due to preside over the last cabinet meeting before a summer break on Wednesday morning.

French presidential health problems have traditionally been kept almost secret from the public -- President Francois Mitterrand was diagnosed with cancer not long after being elected in 1981, but only revealed the information in 1992.

Sarkozy promised to provide regular health updates when he took office, and results of a blood and cardiovascular health check published on July 3 were normal.
