Musharraf to be in court on July 29

Updated: 2009-07-23 00:02 ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday summoned former President Pervez Musharraf to defend charges leveled against him for imposing emergency on Nov. 3, 2007. The 14-member larger bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry issued a notice to Pervez Musharraf to appear in person or through counsel on July 29.
The judges team heard the case relating the promulgation of emergency on Nov. 3 and the appointment of judges of higher judiciary. Giving his remarks, the chief judge said justice will not meet its demands, if the court gives verdict without giving explanation chance to Musharraf. He said the case is highly important. Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday said in his remarks that the judges who took oath on PCO on Nov. 3, 2007, ran foul of the order of seven Supreme Court judges. Former Attorney General for Pakistan Malik Mohammad Qayyum said that he was ready to defend Musharraf at the Supreme Court if he was asked to do so. He termed the decision of the apex court highly appreciable and according to the law and the Constitution. He said that the Supreme Court had taken a good step to give a chance to Musharraf to explain his position about the imposition of emergency in the country. |
