NEW YORK: New York City police say a man who told an undercover officer to get off his building's steps punched the officer and got into a struggle over the officer's gun before being shot dead.

Police say Shem Walker grabbed the officer's gun Saturday night after hitting him on the head.

Police spokesman Paul Browne says other officers heard the undercover officer or a plainclothes colleague identify themselves.

But city Councilwoman Letitia James says Walker's relatives say they were nearby and didn't hear any officers identify themselves.

The undercover officer was serving as backup for a Brooklyn drug investigation at a delicatessen a few doors away.

James says Walker often asked people not to linger there.
