The Myanma Airways XY-ADW jet carrying 80 passengers from Yangon landed about 90 metres wide of the runway in Sittwe, about 320 km (200 miles) northwest of the capital.

An official from Myanmar's national flag carrier said two passengers and the pilot were treated in hospital for injuries but none of them were in a critical condition.

The landing gear and one wing of the jet were severely damaged, the official told Reuters.

One man travelling on the plane said the passengers were stuck inside the aircraft and cabin crew took a long time to open emergency doors.

"We were all in a state of panic. Many were crying. Oxygen was running out and breathing became difficult," the passenger told Reuters by telephone.

Myanma Airways is the only state-owned carrier in the former Burma, which also has three joint venture airlines.
