A symbolic wedding during Int'l Day against Homophobia
Bride Yajaira stands on a chair at his symbolic wedding ceremony during the International Day against Homophobia in Oaxaca, Mexico May 17, 2009. Yajaira and most of the guests belong to an ancient Muxhe community in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region made up of men who take up female roles in the community. Before the arrival of the Spaniards in Mexico, the Muxhes were considered part of a third gender with a well-defined social role. Today the term is often used as a synonym for homosexuality.
