7 policemen wounded in clash with militants in Istanbul

ANKARA -- Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler said on Monday that seven Turkish policemen were wounded in a shootout with suspected militants in the largest Turkish city of Istanbul, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The clashes erupted early Monday morning after an armed man opened fire on police officers who were on patrol in Bostanci district in the Asian side of Istanbul, according to the report.

The Istanbul governor told reporters that there is "one or two terrorists" at a house, adding the suspect is a member of an illegal leftist organization.

Guler also said one of the injured police officers is in serious condition.

Police helicopters are hovering above the site where ambulances and fire trucks were standing by, said the report.
