Venezuelan president creates Women's Ministry

Updated: 2009-03-09 10:44 CARACAS -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced on Sunday the creation of a ministry of women and dedicated his Sunday TV-radio program "Alo, Presidente" to the Women's International Day. Chavez announced the creation of a ministry on women and equality of gender will be charged by Maria Leon, however the ministry still does not has an official name, and Chavez suggested to call it "People's Power for the Women and Gender Equality." "With this decision this organization will have financial budget and a more complex structure with more repercussion in its work on women," Chavez said. Chavez also dedicated his weekly opinion article in the official daily "Ultimas Noticias" to Venezuelan women. "Today I dedicate these lines, with all the force of my homeland passion, with all the sublime fire of my love, of my loyalty and of my dreams for a better world, to the selfless and fighter Venezuelan women," Chavez wrote in the article. "Without the real women's liberation, it will be impossible the full liberation of the peoples and I am convinced that a truly Socialist must be a truly feminist," Chavez said. |
