Japan's cybercrime cases hit record high in 2008: survey

TOKYO -- Japan's cybercrime cases jumped by 15.5 percent year-on-year to 6,321 in 2008, hitting a record high since comparable data became available in 2000, said a survey released by the National Police Agency (NPA) on Thursday.

The number of cybercrimes in 2008, including Internet-related cases of threat, libel, illegal access and fraud, were three times as many as that of 2004, when the figure read 2,081.

While cases of threats and illegal access leaped by 90 percent and 20 percent, respectively, to 112 and 1,740, those of libel and fraud dipped by 22.8 percent and 0.3 percent to 61 and 1,508, said the survey.

The NPA agency will intensify its efforts to improve its investigative ability so as to crack down on cybercrimes, according to NPA officials.
