Carnival revellers covered each other with mud from mangrove swamps hold a shark's jaw as they get ready to parade in the streets of Curuca at the point where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic Ocean, February 22, 2009. The tradition of covering the body with mud dates back some 20 years when area residents feared the mangroves were starting to die on the river's banks. The sign reads, "Beware of the shark."
