Valentine lover recreates rose petal scene from American Beauty

Updated: 2009-02-13 16:18 A woman has spent thousands of pounds recreating the rose petal scene from the film 'American Beauty' as a Valentine's Day surprise for her boyfriend.
Lesley Heague booked a hotel's penthouse suite and covered the bed in red rose petals to act out the provocative sequence from the 1999 blockbuster. The blonde 25-year-old even hired a photographer to capture her version of the scene, made famous by actress Mena Suvari, for a personalised card. Miss Heague decided to stage the elaborate ploy after asking her lover, Luke Scrase, what film he would most like on DVD as a Valentine's gift. She expected Mr Scrase, 21, to be bowled over by the romantic gesture, believing that the Oscar-winning comedy was his favourite film. But she was left deflated after realising that she had misheard him, and that his favourite movie was actually the crime-thriller 'American Gangster', starring Denzel Washington. Unfortunately Miss Heague had already forked out £695 on the room at Southport's luxurious Vincent Hotel and bought the petals from two dozen red roses. She said: "I wanted to do something really special for Luke. I was sure he said he was a big fan of American Beauty, so I thought I'd go the whole hog and set up a themed weekend. "I was so pleased with it all and mentioned it his Luke's best friend, only to be told that he has never seen American Beauty. I must have misheard what he said." Mr Scrase added: "American Gangster is a great film. I've no idea what American Beauty is about but it won a few Oscars so it must be worth watching." American beauty tells the tale of an advertising executive, played by Kevin Spacey, who has a mid-life crisis after falling in love with his daughter's high school cheerleader friend.
