WELLINGTON-- The Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) confirmed on Tuesday that eight people died in the floods last week on northwest Guadalcanal.

The Malaita Provincial Disaster Office has informed the NDMO about receiving reports of damage, due to floods and strong winds, in three wards of the province, the Suva-based Pacnews regional news agency reported on Tuesday.

In wards 11 and 13 - houses were damaged by strong winds, while in part of ward 14, near the Kware River, there were reports of damage to food gardens and other properties.

More floods are expected as the weather office predicts more rain and bad weather in the coming days.

The NMDO has advised people living on the Guadalcanal plains and along rivers to take heed of flood warnings.
