JAKARTA -- Indonesian tourism generated up to 70 trillion rupiah (about $7 billion ) in 2008, said an official of Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism quoting by the Jakarta Post on Monday.

Indonesia received 6.45 million foreign visitors with each spending up to 1,178 dollars per day last year, according to Sapta Nirwandar, the Ministry's Director General for Marketing.

"Even though we are in the midst of a global economic downturn, the Visit Indonesia 2008 program achieved favorable results," Sapta said, adding that the program will continue in 2009.

Sapta also said that due to the ongoing economic decline, the Indonesian government would focus its tourism promotion efforts within Southeast Asia.
