Tokyo stocks start new year trading

TOKYO -- Japanese share prices moved higher Monday, with the benchmark Nikkei-225 index rising above the psychologically-important 9,000 level for the first time since November 11 in early trading.

About 10 minutes after the opening bell, the Nikkei index was trading at 9,051, up 191.50 points or 2.16 percent.

The broader Topix index of all first-section shares gained 21.13 points or 2.46 percent to 880.37.

It was the stock market's first session since the New Year holidays.
