Over 100 killed in New Year holidays in Central America

MANAGUA -- At least 101 people died in events related to New Year celebrations in Central America, according to press reports reaching Managua on Friday.

In Nicaragua, 19 people died in different events in the single day of January 1, official radio station "La Nueva Radio Ya" reported.

Among the dead, nine were killed, four were drowned, three died in traffic accidents, two committed suicide and one died of heavy drinking.

In Honduras, 30 people were killed in different violent accidents and another 40 were injured, police said.

In Guatemala, the Civil National Police said that 38 people died during the New Year holidays, among them 34 were killed with fire guns, three died in traffic accidents and one was drowned.

In El Salvador, authorities reported that at least two people died and 37 were injured in traffic accidents on December 31, 2008 and Jan, 1, 2009.

Costa Rican Red Cross said that four people died in violent events in the country on the last day of 2008, while In Panama, eight people were killed in the holidays.
