BRASILIA -- Twenty inmates escaped from a prison in Brazil early Thursday, authorities said.

The prisoners, who cut through some barbed wire to escape, are probably carrying some weapons, said the state Department of Penitentiary Administration.

No further information about how they got the weapons was given.

Authorities did not reveal the number of inmates or guards at the prison in Sao Paulo state.

Escapes often happen in Brazil because many prisons are overcrowded and lack adequate security measures.
