LONDON  – Naturists vowed Tuesday to fight plans to close one of Britain's first nudist beaches, after authorities said erosion had left too little space for naked sunbathers and families to share.

The 200-metre (550-foot) stretch of beach in Corton, near Lowestoft in eastern England, should be "de-designated", according to a report by the local council.

It said erosion of the nearby coastline had left "very little beach" for residents and the nudist area should be made available for "families and others."

But the British Naturism group said it would contest the recommendation, which is due to be considered by Waveney District Council on Thursday.

The group's spokesman Malcolm Boura, 55, said the beach had been nudist since 1979.

"Once we've been able to discuss the matter with the council, I'm sure we can come up with an amicable solution," he said.

"We would welcome any proposal to move the beach slightly further south but we do not want to lose a designated area.

"This is used by several hundred naturists on a good summer's day.

"It's too early to be talking about any legal action but, as is the position with anything like this, it's always an option."
