BANGKOK - Three people were killed by an improvised bomb that exploded in a market in southern Thailand on Friday, police said.

They said suspected Muslim rebels robbed and beat up a store owner in Chana district of Narathiwat province and when police arrived to investigate, the bomb was detonated.

Police said three people were killed and 10 injured by the bomb, fashioned out of a gas cannister.

The rubber-producing region bordering Malaysia has been ravaged by daily violence since 2004, although the shadowy rebels behind it have never revealed themselves or claimed responsibility.
