Flood claims 25 dead or missing in Vietnam

HANOI -- At least 25 people were killed or still missing in the Tropic Storm Noul prolonging from November 16 till now in central Vietnam, with estimated losses of $8.4 million, the local newspaper Young People reported on Friday.

The newly-formed tropical low in the East Sea is forecast to hit the central coast between Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan provinces in the next few days, with the winds of up to nine on the Beaufort scale and deliver heavy rain from Thua Thien Hue to Ninh Thuan coastal provinces and to the Central Highlands said the Central Hydrometeorology Forecast Center.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Thursday sent an emergency message to relevant ministries to take step to overcome the aftermaths of the prolong floods and prepare for a new downpour expected to hit the central and Central Highlands provinces of Vietnam.  

So far this year, there have been 515 people dead or missing in the natural disasters, more than 230,000 hectares of crops and 54, 000 ponds have been ruined, over one million fowls killed and 4, 700 houses destroyed, said the General Statistics Office.
