The Mark Jason 1 was en route to the northernmost island of Batanes when it went down Wednesday night, the coast guard operations centre in Manila reported. It was carrying a crew of 20.

"Nine have been rescued while 11 are still unaccounted for," the coast guard said, adding that planes and two coast guard cutters had been deployed to search for the crew.

It said the vessel is believed to have gone down.
