Updated: 2008-11-25 13:53 CARACAS -- A total of 106 people were detained due to crimes or minor incidents during Venezuela's municipal and regional elections, the chief of the Operational Strategic Command, General Jesus Gonzalez Gonzalez, said Monday.
Among the detained, some were believed to be responsible for the loss of two AK-47 riffles inside a voting center in the northwestern state of Anzoategui, where a man was killed by gunfire. Others were detained in relation to the stealing of electoral material or the robbery of two bicycles outside a voting center in central Guarico state, said Gonzalez. In the state of Bolivar, a clash resulted in one injury. Almost 17 million Venezuelans were registered to vote in the elections Sunday for 22 governors, 328 mayors and 233 local legislators. About 130 foreign observers monitored the vote. With 96 percent of votes counted nationally, Chavez's ruling United Socialist Party garnered 17 states while the opposition gained the capital Caracas and the two most populous states -- Miranda, Zulia -- as well as three other states. |
