Science-promotion event held in Austria

Updated: 2008-11-10 08:49 VIENNA -- Austria held science-promotion activities in six cities simultaneously Saturday to popularize scientific and technological knowledge in the country. The activity, themed "Long Night of Research", was held in capital Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Klagenfurt, Innsbruck and Wiener Neustadt and attracted some 240,000 people. During the event, a total of 375 university laboratories, scientific research institutions and science popularization sites opened to the general public. About 1,000 researchers came out from "secret doors" to carry out on-site research activities. By way of on-site explanation, demonstration and experimentation, the researchers explained to people many strange phenomena in everyday life, popularized scientific and technological knowledge, advocated healthy lifestyle and the idea of respecting and protecting wild animals. The Austrian Ministry of Infrastructure, Economy and Science and the Austrian Council for Research and Technology Development jointly hosted the event, which would last until Sunday The first "Long Night of Research" was held in October 2005 in Vienna, Linz and Innsbruck and attracted 47,000 citizens. |
