MANILA -- Yi Cheng, President of China Buddhist Association, was elected co-chairman of the Asia Conference of Religions on Peace (ACRP) during its 7th assembly, which ended last Wednesday.

Another six leaders, including Ding Guangxun, Liu Bainian, Ren Farong, Yu Zhengui, Xue Cheng and Dao Shuren, were also elected as members of ACRP's governing board, with five of them also included in its Executive board.

A total of 28 religious leaders from China Committee on Religion and Peace (CCRP) took part in the weeklong assembly, which is held once in every five years.

CCRP was established in July 1994 and included the leading figures of the country's five major religions: Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholic and Christianity.

It also joined the World Conference on Religion and Peace in the same year, and became an ACRP member in 1996.

In the past decade the CCRP has made great contributions to enhancing unity and harmony among Chinese religious groups and has increased exchange among their international counterparts, as well as promoting and safeguarding national unification.
